Actually i thought about it quite a while but not able to find a correct solution. may be if we can know the error you are getting, we might find a solution. because if it would have been single .tpl file we would have added the code in right.tpl manually before hook, but there are two files , 1 .tpl, and 2 .php for category module. If Moderators are looking the thread may be they can give some input.
